Evidence-Based Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation for Men and Women

Pelvic floor dysfunction is one of the most common — and most undertreated — musculoskeletal conditions affecting adults. Despite affecting an estimated one in three women and a significant but underreported percentage of men, pelvic floor conditions are frequently dismissed, misdiagnosed, or treated with generic protocols that don't address the full clinical picture.

At Bray Chiropractic & Wellness in Glastonbury, pelvic floor therapy is a primary clinical specialty. Dr. Bray is one of the few providers in Connecticut — of any discipline — offering evidence-based pelvic floor rehabilitation that integrates chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, and pelvic floor assessment into a single, comprehensive treatment model.

What Is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that form the base of the pelvis. These structures support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs, contribute to core stability and spinal load transfer, and play a central role in sexual function, bladder and bowel control, and movement.

When the pelvic floor isn't functioning properly — whether due to overactivity, underactivity, injury, postural changes, or neurological factors — the effects can extend well beyond the pelvis. Low back pain, hip pain, SI joint dysfunction, and chronic pain conditions frequently have a pelvic floor component that goes unidentified and untreated.

Pelvic Floor Conditions Treated

Pelvic floor therapy at Bray Chiropractic & Wellness addresses a wide range of conditions in both men and women, including:

  • Pelvic floor hypertonicity and overactivity — the most common presentation, often the underlying driver of multiple symptoms

  • Pelvic pain — including pain that is constant, positional, or activity-related

  • Dyspareunia — pain with intercourse

  • Urinary urgency and frequency

  • Stress urinary incontinence — leaking with coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise

  • Urge urinary incontinence

  • Tailbone pain (coccydynia)

  • Constipation-related pelvic floor dysfunction

  • Pudendal neuralgia — nerve pain in the pelvic region

  • Postpartum core dysfunction and diastasis recti

  • Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction in athletes — a commonly overlooked contributor to hip pain, groin complaints, and core instability

  • Male pelvic floor dysfunction — including pelvic pain, urinary urgency, post-surgical pelvic issues, and pudendal neuralgia

How Is Pelvic Floor Therapy Different at This Practice?

Most pelvic floor providers — whether chiropractors, physical therapists, or occupational therapists — treat the pelvic floor in relative isolation. Assessment focuses on the pelvic floor muscles themselves, and treatment is directed at those structures specifically.

The problem with this approach is that the pelvic floor doesn't function in isolation. It works in coordination with the lumbar spine, sacroiliac joints, hips, diaphragm, and deep core musculature. When any of these structures are dysfunctional, the pelvic floor is affected — and vice versa.

At Bray Chiropractic & Wellness, pelvic floor assessment is always integrated with a full musculoskeletal evaluation. That means the spine, hips, sacrum, and surrounding soft tissues are assessed alongside the pelvic floor — and treatment addresses all of the contributing factors, not just the pelvic floor in isolation.

This integrated approach, delivered by a single provider with expertise in chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, and pelvic floor rehabilitation, produces more complete and durable results than pelvic floor treatment alone.

What Does a Pelvic Floor Assessment Involve?

Your first pelvic floor visit at Bray Chiropractic & Wellness includes a detailed health history, a full musculoskeletal assessment, and a specialized pelvic floor evaluation. Everything is explained clearly before it happens, and every aspect of the assessment is performed with your full informed consent. Your comfort is the priority throughout.

Assessment may include:

  • Comprehensive health, posture, breathing, and movement evaluation

  • Orthopedic and neurological examination of the spine, hips, and pelvis

  • Chiropractic assessment of spinal and sacropelvic mechanics

  • External pelvic floor assessment

  • Internal pelvic floor assessment when clinically appropriate and with full consent

  • Education on findings, contributing factors, and the treatment plan

First pelvic floor visits are scheduled for 60 to 90 minutes to allow adequate time for a thorough evaluation. Treatment typically begins at the first visit.

A Note for Patients Who Are Hesitant

Many patients who seek pelvic floor care have never discussed these symptoms openly with a provider before — or have felt dismissed or uncomfortable when they did. Some patients have been told their symptoms are normal, that nothing can be done, or that they simply need to manage.

That won't happen here. Dr. Bray approaches pelvic floor care with the same clinical directness, thoroughness, and respect he brings to every patient. If you have questions or concerns before your first visit, you are welcome to reach out before booking. There is no obligation and no pressure — just a straight answer about whether this is the right fit for your situation.

Pelvic Floor Therapy Training and Credentials

Dr. Bray has completed advanced post-doctoral training through the Herman & Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute, including Pelvic Function Level 1, Level 2A, and Level 2B. He also holds a subspecialty diploma in hip and pelvis specialization through the Academy of Clinical Massage and is a member of the American Chiropractic Association's Women's Health Specialty Council.

This level of specialized training in pelvic floor rehabilitation is uncommon among chiropractors nationally and rare in the Connecticut market specifically.
